Ms. Kopley’s Counselor Corner-

This newsletter contains information that may be of interest to Hollymead families.
It covers topics that are covered in class lessons, projects, & happenings in the community.

Megan Kopley, School Counselor

In the Classroom

Grades K-1: We started the year learning the 5 rules of being a good listener.  Ask your child to share them with you! Currently, we are working on recognizing strong feelings and ways that we can calm our bodies and minds down so our brains can make good choices.  Ask your student to teach you about rainbow breath, starfish breath, shark breath or watch this video with them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mZbzDOpylA to learn how to belly breath.

Grades 2-4: I have done an introduction and get to know you lesson.  We will begin formal lessons in the second quarter.

Grades 3-5: We are having a positive ride on The Energy Bus!  Our focus this quarter is on The Energy Bus For Kids by Jon Grodon.  Each week, we are dissecting one of the 5 rules to help stay positive and have a growth mindset.  At the end of each day students were challenged to ask you to share a highlight and success of the day and for them to share one with you.  This week we are recording skits for Rule #3: No Bullies Allowed!

Food for Kids Program

The program helps families who might need a little extra food for their child.  Each Friday, students will confidentially be given a bag with food that could be used for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.  If your family is interested in receiving the weekend food bag please contact Megan Kopley at 434-973-8301.

A Note from Your PTO

Dear Parents,

Did you know that Albemarle County Public Schools has a Parent Council?  As PTO President and Vice-President, we both serve on this council. The mission of the Parent Council is to serve as a forum for parents, educators, and school officials to share ideas and exchange information in order to further advance the quality of the public education system. We meet once a month in various schools around the county.  We will share the information we learn once a month via Hornet Happenings and at Parent Community Chats.

Last week we met and heard about the many ways our district supports the mental health of our students by the joint efforts of Region 10, UVA, and our school psychologist and counselors.  We also learned about the redistricting committee and the Woodbrook Elementary School expansion.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, or you can visit the Parent Council website for more information, ACPS Parent Council.

Gratefully,
Your PTO President and Vice President,

Please Verify Your Child’s Info In Parent Portal-Deadline Friday!

Parents,

In August and September of each new school year, parents and guardians should go through

the Registration Verification process to review their student’s information and make any

necessary updates. This process is important to ensure that Hollymead has the most current

information for your student and that you can review annual required notifications.

Access to change your child’s information will be restricted after September 30!

Please review the information below and contact the office if you have any questions.

Registration Verification & Updates

After the initial registration form has been submitted, any changes to your student’s

information will need to be handled in one of the following three ways:

1. If your student has not yet started attending school (Pre-Registered Students), please contact

your student’s school directly to request changes to their information submitted during

registration.  This includes students who have been registered to attend an ACPS school in the

upcoming school year.

2. In August and September of each new school year, parents and guardians should go through

the Registration Verificationprocess to review their student’s information and make any

necessary updates.  This process is important to ensure that ACPS has the most current

information for your student and that you can review annual required notifications.  The

Registration Verification tool is available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal at the beginning of

the school year.

3. After the Registration Verification process has closed for the current school year, parents and

guardians can change basic contact information, emergency contact information, electronic

notification contact information, bus supervision information, etc,  through a year

round Student Information Update tool.  The Student Information Update Tool is also available

in the PowerSchool Parent Portal after the Registration Verification tool has closed.

Registration Verification (August – September)

At the beginning of each school year, Albemarle County Public Schools requests that parents

and guardians update their registration information.  It is important that schools know about

any changes to information that has been provided during the registration process and that

they have access to current contact information for students.  This process is completed using a

pre-filled registration form that uses data that is already in our student information system

(PowerSchool).  Parents/guardians review that information and make any necessary changes.

In addition, this process provides parents/guardians the ability to provide responses to any

required annual agreements and permissions.

The registration verification form is made available to parents in August of each year and is

accessed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  An email is sent out to announce the

availability of the form for the current school year.  For more information about the

PowerSchool Parent Portal, please visit the Parents page on the ACPS website.  To get a copy of

the setup information that is required to create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account and link it

to your student(s), please contact your student’s school.

How do I get started with Registration Verification?

If you have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, go to https://sis.k12albemarle.org/ and sign in

to the PowerSchool Parent Portal. From the Parent Portal,

1. Select the student you wish to update along the top

2. Either:
⦁ Click the Student Registration Verification button sis registration photo on the left sidebar

Or
⦁ Click the Applications icon arrow in the top right corner and select Student Registration

Verification

3. Enter your student’s date of birth to verify access to the form

4. Follow the prompts to begin the form

5. Review all information on each page and make changes where necessary
