High School Planning for Parents of 8th graders: Several dates and events are coming up to prepare the class of 2022 (and their parents!) for high school registration. Please put these dates on your calendars so you can plan ahead:
December 11 6:30-8:00: Please come to Sutherland for a parent evening to hear details about the transition to high school and the registration process. In addition to discussing the timeline for registration for high school courses, we will also have representatives from various programs at AHS and Albemarle County, including AVID, CATEC, MESA, and the AHS School Counseling team. We are also hoping to have representatives from the other Academies and Murray High School. Don’t know what all of these programs are? Even better reason to attend on December 11!
January 4 6:00-7:00: Albemarle High School will be hosting a Curriculum Fair. This is a great opportunity for 8th grade students to get a glimpse of the variety of elective options AHS has available. We strongly encourage students to attend this event so they can see for themselves what many of the electives are all about.
January 12: The 8th grade class will be visiting CATEC in the morning to learn about their programs. Please visit their website, https://www.catec.org/, for more information about CATEC and their offerings.
Mid-January: Ms. Wright and Ms. Lindsay will begin meeting individually with each 8th grade student and their parents to discuss 9th grade courses, course planning, and answer any questions you have about high school. We will use Sign-Up Genius this year to allow you to sign up for meeting times. We will share more information in the near future about scheduling these 30-minute meetings.
Many of you are already aware that the 3 high school academies have their Open Houses over the next few weeks, as we announced in a prior Sutherland Matters. Those dates are posted here, on our SMS School Counseling page that is dedicated to the high school registration process. To keep up with all of the dates, and updates, related to registration for high school, check the SMS School Counseling webpage often!
If you have immediate questions, please feel free to contact Lisa Wright or Heather Lindsay in the Counseling Office. They are already working hard to ensure the transition to High School goes smoothly for everyone!
