PTO Fundraiser – Attractions Dining Guide

Hi Everyone,
The Sutherland PTO is once again selling the Attractions Dining Guide as a fundraiser.  Each book costs $25.00 and our school will get to keep between $10.00 and $12.50 per book.  These books are loaded with valuable coupons (please see the list below) and can easily pay for themselves after just a few uses.  They are wonderful to keep in your car, office or home and include coupons for places that we all patronize on a regular basis.
To purchase one, you may either complete the form below including your child’s name, grade and homeroom and drop in the Attractions Dining box in the office along with a check ( SMS PTO) or go to and pay via the EZ pay system using the username SUTHERLAND (we will be notified of your payment).  The coupon book will be sent home with your child via their backpack within a few days.  If you wish to take advantage of the buy 5 get one free promotion, they must be paid for via the EZ pay.
Please contact Melissa MacKnight at if you have any questions.  I encourage you to help us make a difference in our school by providing some extras for the students and staff!
Thanks so much,
Melissa MacKnight

Back-To-School Night, 9/12!

Dear Sutherland Families,

Please join us on Thursday, September 12 for Back-to-School at Sutherland. There will be a meeting at 6:30 in the Media Center with Mrs. McCullough with information about the Gateway Program and opportunities for students to participate in learning extensions this year followed by the general meeting in the gym for all parents at 7:00 and a chance to meet your children’s teachers and hear about classes.

One very important change in our calendar is that we are postponing our September 19 parent conference night to October 17.  We will still hold parent conferences on September 26 as originally announced.

We look forward to seeing you this Thursday, September 12!!

Sutherland School Improvement Review – Parent Meeting, 9/11 6:30 – 8:00

Dear Sutherland Parents,

Each year, Sutherland creates a school improvement plan with target goals to focus our efforts based upon our successes and needs.  We will be holding an information and strategy session on September 11to review our work from last year and to set new goals and strategies for this school year.

We would love to have parent members on our team. At the suggestion of parents at last week’s meeting, we will meet in the Media Center from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. this Wednesday.  You are invited to help us review our performance and through your questions and suggestions to help us determine strategies for evaluating our school performance.  This often includes adopting new approaches to our work.  Your attendance at this meeting will not commit you to joining the school improvement team, though we hope you will consider joining!  We hope you will join us this Wednesday.

PTO & l’Alliance Francaise Offer Fall French

We are happy to announce that Sutherland will be offering a French fall session for 6th-8th graders through the Alliance Française of Charlottesville. This program will be offered on Monday mornings from 8:00-8:55 a.m. each week from September 16 – November 25 (8 classes). The curriculum will be geared to help 6th grade students prepare for the upcoming years of French in 7th and 8th grade; however, it is also for any 7th or 8th grader who would like more French practice (or the chance to learn a new language). The focus will be mostly on speaking and will involve many fun, hands–on activities. Michelle Katstra, a former Charlottesville High School French teacher and graduate of UVA’s Curry School of Education, will be teaching this class.
The office has hard copies. All forms should be turned in to the front office at SMS. The fee for this class is $96 for 8 sessions. Checks should be made to Sutherland Middle School PTO. Any questions should be directed to Michelle Katstra at
Please act quickly!  Registration ends Friday, September 13th!

Sutherland Middle School PTO
1st Semester, 2013

This is a perfect opportunity to immerse your child in French language and culture, right here in Charlottesville! The Alliance Française will begin offering a before-school class at SMS! All students are welcome, but this class is especially great for 6th graders who would like a basis of the French language before they begin 7th grade French at SMS. This is also a wonderful opportunity for a student who loves languages and would like to learn a new one, or who just wants some enhancement of the French they are already learning!

This class will be taught by Michelle Katstra. Michelle has a BA in French from UVA and a Master’s of Teaching from UVA’s Curry School of Education. Post-college, Michelle worked at EuroDisney in Paris, France. Upon her return to the USA, she was a French teacher and department chair at Charlottesville High School.  Most recently, Michelle helped to write an online French program for the Navy. Michelle currently teaches after-school French at Hollymead Elementary School and tutors students learning the French language.
