You might be familiar with Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, or Ava DuVernay’s Wrinkle in Time, but have you heard of Oscar Mischeaux’s The Exile? Oscar Micheaux was was the author, director, and producer of over 40 films in the 1920s and 30s and he cast people of color in the roles. These movies were made by African Americans for an African American audience. He didn’t shy away from difficult topics either. He focused on what people were living with day to day and the difficulties of a segregated world. Mischeaux portrayed African Americans as real people and made it his life’s work to counteract the negative White portrayals of Jim Crow and minstrelry that were common at the time.
